They dwell where the living do not walk: at the banks of the infernal rivers, in the caves that lead below, and in the torchlit train of Hekate.
Who They Are
The Underworld Nymphs are the spirits of the hidden realm beneath the earth — not the Olympian gods of death, but the local, attendant powers who dwell in the dark roads and the chthonic waters. The Lampades carry torches for Hekate; the Cocytides weep beside the river of lamentation; the Lethe grant the mercy of forgetting; the Stygian nymphs guard the unbreakable oath; and the Orphne and Melinoe move in the deep shadows where the dead and the dreaming meet.
Unlike the bright Nymphai of spring and meadow, these are not approached for joy but for necessity, transformation, and reverence. They are the psychopomps, the midwives of death, the guardians of memory and its erasure. In the ancient world, offerings to the underworld were made at crossroads, at graves, in caves, and at the dark of the moon — always with care, always with respect, for these powers do not forgive carelessness.
To know them is to accept that the earth has a shadow as well as a face, and that the Nymphai dwell in both. The underworld is not evil; it is the quiet place of return, the dark womb from which renewal is possible. These nymphs are its keepers.

River of wailing

Nymphs of the Kokytos, the river of lamentation in the underworld. Its waters echo with the grief of those who have crossed.
River of forgetfulness

Spirits of the river whose waters erase memory. They grant the dead the merciful oblivion needed to enter a new phase of being.
River Styx
Stygian NymphsΣτυγίδες
Guardians of the black waters by which the gods themselves swear. Their river is the boundary, the oath, and the unbreakable law.

Nymphs of the deep darkness, the chthonic gloom where no torch reaches. They dwell in the silent places beneath the world.

Offerings
At the Threshold
The classical offering to the underworld nymphs is given at the crossing-point — a crossroads, a cave mouth, a grave, or a bowl set upon the earth at night.
- A libation of water, honey, or wine poured into the earth or at a crossroads
- A torch or candle lit at dusk, especially at the dark of the moon
- Pomegranates, dark grapes, or black seeds — the classical food of the underworld
- A coin placed at a crossroads or buried, the old fare for the ferryman and the chthonic powers
- Songs sung in low voices at night, or the names of the dead spoken with love
- Acts of care: tending graves, cleaning a burial place, planting dark flowers for the dead
- Obsidian, black stones, or hematite placed upon an altar of the underworld
Taboos
What is Forbidden
The underworld powers are exacting. They do not jest, and they do not overlook disrespect. Approach them with solemnity and clear intention.
- Never call the underworld nymphs frivolously or without cause; they attend serious matters.
- Do not invoke them in sunlight or in places of celebration; the chthonic powers belong to the dark.
- Never break an oath sworn by the Styx; the Stygian nymphs enforce it without mercy.
- Do not disturb the resting dead or speak ill of them in the presence of the underworld powers.
- Avoid wearing bright colours or loud ornaments when making offerings to the dark kindred.
- Never offer spoiled or careless food to the dead; it dishonours both the departed and the nymphs.
- Do not seek visions of the dead without first establishing protection and clear intention.
A Prayer
